Sun City West, AZ— The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Adopt A Highway Program and the Sun City West PRIDES are joining together to kick-off October 2014 as Keep Maricopa County Beautiful Month.
MCDOT crews and Sun City West PRIDES Adopt A Highway volunteers will be out in force on Thursday, October 2nd, cleaning up debris and litter along several Sun City West roadways.
The Sun City West cleanup is the first of many MCDOT “Keep Maricopa County Beautiful” Adopt A Highway cleanups scheduled throughout the month of October across Maricopa County.
“The Sun City West PRIDES and MCDOT Adopt A Highway have been partners for nearly 20 years. We are honored to kick-off the inaugural Keep Maricopa County Beautiful month. We encourage others throughout the County to join in the MCDOT Adopt A Highway Program and take pride in their communities,” said Bud Armstrong, President of the Sun City West PRIDES.
“The MCDOT Adopt A Highway Program and its hundreds of volunteers continue to make our communities a better place to live. Keep Maricopa County Beautiful month will be an annual celebration of our communities, our County and our environment,” said Clint Hickman, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
“We are excited to celebrate the first Keep Maricopa County Beautiful Month. We hope to enlist several new Adopt A Highway volunteer or business sponsorship groups and break all previous records for the most litter and debris collected during October. Answer the call of the open road. Somewhere out there is a County road waiting for you,” said Alva Tovar, MCDOT Adopt A Highway Coordinator.
MCDOT launched its Adopt A Highway program with the first volunteer group in 1990. Today, more than 130 groups help to keep hundreds of miles of County roadways free of litter and debris every year. Since July 2013, MCDOT Adopt A Highway volunteers have picked up more than 2000 bags of trash and nearly 300 tires from over 250 miles of County roadway. These efforts save the County over $10 million every year.
